[Good call, good call. Russell lifts the lid off the container and moves the cake to the larger plate, then carefully cuts two generous pieces and shifts them to the smaller two.
One plate gets delivered to Kantera and the other is placed in front of the chair across from him. Russell pulls out the chair and sits.
[-Russell probably won't start eating until Kantera does, so Kantera takes his first bite. It came out well, he thinks, and it's not like he expects Russell's standards to be particularly high, but he'll still be relieved once he gets Russell's verdict.]
[Russell hadn’t had many opportunities to eat cake in his life. Money was always tight and luxuries like desserts were never really afforded him. He almost didn’t know what to expect as he speared a bite and raised it to his mouth.
It was sweet. Well, obviously. It was chocolate, after all. But it wasn’t too sweet. It was… nice? It was soft and springy and fell apart in his mouth. He could see why people liked it.]
[Maybe he can convince Russell to let him make cake for him more often... Would it be easier or harder to get him to accept it if it's not tied to a birthday?]

I think… even Gardenia would be impressed.
[There’s a hint of a smile as he says it, but it lingers only a moment before being replaced with something more heavy and melancholic.]
……Today is… her birthday, too.
[Or, the real Gardenia’s, at least.]

[He'd say 'what a coincidence' but his gut tells him to not give voice to that, just in case.]
-I have often thought it would be nice to cook together with her, someday.
