Rather than a matter of 'needing' or 'deserving', I believe such things are a matter of 'wanting to'. As I consider you a friend, I would like to celebrate your birth.
[Russell knew Kantera wouldn’t forget, but he’d still kind of hoped Kantera would forget. Even though there was truly nothing worth celebrating about today…]
[There is no escape from Kantera fussing, unfortunately.
Kantera arrives with a tupperware with a chocolate cake inside. At the very least, it doesn't really look like a Certain Boss Cake, but it does look delicious.
[He stares at Kantera blankly for a moment, then looks down at the cake and stares equally blankly at it. After a minute of that, he seems to realize he’s supposed to do something and moves aside to let him in.]
[He stares silently, awkwardly, at the cake on the table before jerking into motion again and moving to get a couple plates and forks.
They’re simple dishes and silverware that came with the apartment, matching the untouched interior of the place. Honestly if Russell hadn’t opened the door, you might be forgiven for thinking no one lived there.]
[Note to self: get Russell some kind of house decoration or furniture or something. He'd consider inviting Russell to live with him but:
1. In what world would Russell say yes? 2. His and Saya's house has a room specifically designated for them sleeping with other people. Absolutely not.
[Good call, good call. Russell lifts the lid off the container and moves the cake to the larger plate, then carefully cuts two generous pieces and shifts them to the smaller two.
One plate gets delivered to Kantera and the other is placed in front of the chair across from him. Russell pulls out the chair and sits.
[-Russell probably won't start eating until Kantera does, so Kantera takes his first bite. It came out well, he thinks, and it's not like he expects Russell's standards to be particularly high, but he'll still be relieved once he gets Russell's verdict.]
[Russell hadn’t had many opportunities to eat cake in his life. Money was always tight and luxuries like desserts were never really afforded him. He almost didn’t know what to expect as he speared a bite and raised it to his mouth.
It was sweet. Well, obviously. It was chocolate, after all. But it wasn’t too sweet. It was… nice? It was soft and springy and fell apart in his mouth. He could see why people liked it.]
[Maybe he can convince Russell to let him make cake for him more often... Would it be easier or harder to get him to accept it if it's not tied to a birthday?]

If you wouldn't mind, could you tell me when your birthday is?

……Why?

I don’t need anything like that.
… Don’t deserve it, either.

-But if it would make you unhappy, I understand.

[Russell goes silent. It would almost appear he had just cut the communication. However, after several minutes, he speaks up softly:]
… …
June 2nd.

-Mine is August 13th. Do with that information what you will.
June 2nd, un: kantera, voice
[Nothing fancy, nothing loud, but it's the least he can do to celebrate his friend's birth.]
un: russell, voice
…… Okay.
[…He decided he’d oblige him.]
action!

Hello, Doctor.

[Kantera comes in, and sets the cake down on the dining table.]
I hope you like it. I'm not completely certain of your tastes, admittedly.
[Asking Russell what he likes or wants is usually an exercise in futility.]

I hope so, but you should try it first.

It really was a nice looking cake…]

I think… even Gardenia would be impressed.
[There’s a hint of a smile as he says it, but it lingers only a moment before being replaced with something more heavy and melancholic.]
……Today is… her birthday, too.
[Or, the real Gardenia’s, at least.]

[He'd say 'what a coincidence' but his gut tells him to not give voice to that, just in case.]
-I have often thought it would be nice to cook together with her, someday.
